Ghorepani – Poon Hill Trek

Overview

Ghorepani – Poon Hill Trek

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek provides the amazing views you want of the Annapurna Ranges plus local ethnic villages while hiking through beautiful forests, pastures and fields at a moderate pace. From your first step to the last the breathtaking vistas never end as you progress through the diverse eco-system.

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek begins from Nayapul after crossing a suspension bridge over the Modi khola River a short distance from Pokhara. The trail then leads north through the Valley of the Mardi River till it comes to Birethanti. Birethanti is a junction point that leads to the Annapurna sanctuary. Rejuvenate yourself by breathing in the richly scented air of the forest festooned with rhododendron, magnolia and orchids. You may spot the White-Breasted Kingfisher, the highland butterfly and much more. Shortly you will be passing through small settlements such as Tikhedehunqqa, Ulleri, Nayathati and Banthati before reaching Ghorepani. Ghorepani was one of the stops for traders in ancient times en route to Tibet.

Awakening before dawn allows us head to the famed Poon Hill and enjoy the spectacular sunrise, surely one of the highlights of the trek. It’s difficult to express the feelings one has as the sun rises slowly over the horizon and shows the mountains in a painting like panorama. Then it shines on the valleys and homes below before finally illuminating the majestic Annapurna range along with the Dhaulagiri range, sacred Machhapuchhre and the Manaslu Massifs. The golden sunlight paints a picture that will last a lifetime.

Basking in the glow left by such an incredible site we now set off for the quaint village of Ghandruk which is inhabited by Gurung, Magar and Thakali communities. The Gurungs were once well known as Gurkha soldiers serving in various armies throughout the world. Being here at their ancestral home makes viewing the local Gurung cultural museum a must. It’s now time to head back to Pokhara and then Kathmandu where you can take satisfaction in knowing you have done something extraordinary.

Ghorepani is an interesting place with small shops and stalls that sell local products and craft. The town has two parts: one in a saddle and the other a few hundred feet lower. We stop at the higher part of the Ghorepani village that offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains including Annapurna South and Nilgiri mountains. From Poon Hill we will be able to enjoy wonderful panoramic views of the Mustang and Pokhara valleys including the closest views of more than 20 of the highest mountains as well as the close-up views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. The snowy peaks of the high mountains loom above and around us glowing in the morning light. After taking photos and having some coffee or tea, we return to Gorepani. We make a steep descent through the thick forest of old rhododendron trees. When the rhododendron trees are in bloom, these forests turn into gardens of dazzlingly beautiful flowers, mostly red, when seen from the air or from afar. By afternoon we enter the village of Ghandruk, a sloping settlement with stone houses mostly inhabited by the Gurung people. Along with enjoying the stunningly close-up towering views of Fishtail, Annaurna South, and Hiuchuli mountains, we also acquaint ourselves with the simple but rich cultural traditions of the Gurung people at the Gurung Museum in Ghandruk.
